A meal is a planning slot, not a standard portion. Choose quantities and snacks to suit age, appetite and dietary needs.
Meal planning without a universal calorie target
Household members × days × meal slots per person per day. The result tells you how many places in your menu to cover, not how many identical portions to buy. Three meals is a starting setting, not nutritional guidance. Energy needs depend on age, activity and health. Plan snacks, infant feeding and special diets separately.
Choose food you can eat without cooking
Start with familiar foods: canned beans and fish, crispbread, nut butter where allergies allow, dried fruit and shelf-stable drinks in small packs. Check allergens, serving sizes and refrigeration after opening. A manual opener matters as much as the can.
Water, rotation and organization
Rice, pasta and dried meals need water and a safe heat source. Do not count them as ready meals without both. Store food as labelled, with the earliest dates at the front. Plan a one-day menu and extend it across your chosen duration with variety. Start with 3 days and adapt a longer supply to local guidance and your circumstances.
